Soccer Six 2014 Celebrity Football Tournament

2014 saw the first ever Soccer SixFest, combining all the elements of Soccer Six’s expansive heritage into an amazing festival of football and music. Soccer Six went back to it’s roots at Mile End Stadium, East London with an event which was one of the biggest in the company’s 19 year history as it returned to the venue of the first ever Soccer Six – made famous by Oasis and Blur. With it’s imminent 20th anniversary coming up in 2015, Soccer Six enters a new era – using it’s vast and rich history as a force for the future. [source: http://soccer-six.com/soccer-six/]

So, on 31st August 2014, two photographers from eXtreme Aperture Photography were fortunate enough to cover the largest celebrity football tournament in the World, Soccer Six 2014.  This tournament at Mile End stadium contained a host of stars from music and television, including;

  • The Janoskians
  • James Arthur
  • Louie Spence
  • Amy Childs
  • Bars and Melody
  • Rachel Riley
  • Collabro
  • Hollyoaks
  • Overload
  • Harvey
  • Frankie Cocozza & The Telescreen
  • Kingsland Road
  • Lucy Kay
  • Blitz Kids
  • In Hindsight
  • Bailey McConnell
  • MTV Ex On The Beach
  • Ronan Parke
  • The Pow Pow Girls
  • Mazzi Maz
  • Jessica Steele
  •  Anais Gallagher
  • Sweetchix
  • Giles Potter
  • Adam Waithe
  • The Anyones

The tournament allowed many fans to get pretty close to the celebrities with many a ‘selfy’ being taken.  Photo opportunities were significant, with most of the celebrities more than happy to pose for photographs and there were even opportunities to snap a couple of ALS Ice Bucket Challenges!

With around 12 or so photographers or so covering the event, the chances of getting images published in the national press were reduced, especially when I realised one was from probably the largest picture agency in the world, Getty, and they also had someone constantly sending off images to the news desks throughout the day.  I took time out on three occasions during the day to send off a few of my best images to the picture desks and managed to get some success with the Daily Mirror, with a handful of images being published on their website.

With a backdrop of Canary Wharf, stars like James Arthur showed off their footballing skills although is has to be said that in a number of areas, football skills were somewhat lacking.  This is especially true when some of the Girl’s teams were playing – having girls scream as the ball approaches them can be somewhat off-putting and so it’s probably best that a lot of them stick to what they do best, such as singing and acting!

The most popular of the group of celebrities taking part in the tournament were The Janoskians – who I must admit, I had never heard of before the event but they certainly had a large following and the other press photographers there were certainly showing a lot of interest in them.

But they did get my award for the best celebration of the whole tournament!
